Sustainability in the business field Transport Consulting
Integrated planning processes such as urban transport master plans or regional transport plans take all modes of transport into consideration. Here, transportation experts analyse and forecast the current traffic volume and its development based on travel demand and traffic models. Measure-sensitive traffic models enable planners to assess the impact of spatial and traffic planning options on traffic. They provide an important basis for decision-making.
To be able to act in a sustainable manner, it is essential to assess the situation on the basis of economic and ecological factors, including noise or emissions. PTV advises private and public organisations and transport companies on the development of sustainable transport concepts which include both private and commercial transport.
Mastering the challenges
The increasing volume of motorised private traffic and low public transport service quality are major problems in urban areas, in particular in development regions.

Intelligent traffic planning and reduced emissions
Rainer Schwarzmann, Vice President Transport Consulting: "The transport sector plays a major role regarding the reduction of CO2 emissions: around 20 per cent of carbon emissions are produced by traffic of which approx. 95 per cent are caused by road transport. While some areas, such as the building sector, have achieved significant cuts in emissions, traffic-related emissions increased by 12 per cent between 1990 and 2007. Intelligent traffic planning can and must contribute effectively to the reduction of emissions. To this end, it is important to develop solutions for future traffic and transport while ensuring functioning of cities and regions in terms of economy and society.
A comprehensive project that PTV was recently involved in focused on transportation modelling in Hier, Ukraine. The aim of this project is to create an efficient and eco-friendly transport system until the European Football Championship in 2012. Further international projects that we supported with our transportation expertise include the Dubai Public Transport Bus Master and the Transport Master Plan for Qatar whose results will be used for the development of a completely new public transport system.“
Dealing with high traffic volumes
Dealing with high traffic volumes
Rainer Schwarzmann, Vice President Transport Consulting: "The ever increasing volume of motorised traffic makes it necessary to implement new infrastructures and to adopt an integrated approach which includes all transport modes and services and which takes account of both the current and future situation. This allows us to identify infrastructure bottlenecks and to analyse their long-term effects. That's the basis on which we develop strategies and measures designed to support the operability of services, always with a view to ensuring energy efficiency. This includes everything from basic designs of entire networks and systems to the optimisation of individual routes and intersections. A sophisticated methodology allows us to calculate different emissions in a highly reliable manner."
